Train from Rome to Massa and bus to San Romano in Garfagnana

We had a 3 hour train ride from Rome to Massa. The route was up the coast, through Civiteveccia, Livorno & Pisa. About 3/4 full and quite comfortable in 2nd class. Getting luggage on and off is a bit of a struggle! We then had a 2 hour drive in a mini-bus to our Agroturismo. We went up and over the Apian Alps, incredible series of switch backs, narrow roads, and very steep. We passed several marble quarries, and some very small villages. Once over the mountain range the valley opened up a bit, but still quite hilly. Our Agroturismo is reached down a track like a roller-coaster! About 6 bedrooms, some en-suite and some shared bath. Big kitchen and dining area with comfy sitting area as well. Fantastic dinner of penne with pesto, chicken with herbs, fried potatoes & a big salad. Panna cotta for dessert. And lots of red wine. Had a fun time sitting around chatting after dinner, then to bed about 11.
